TMJ Disfunction
I have "TMJ"!
I hear this all of the time.
I always have to STOP MYSELF from rolling my eyes into the back of my head...
Ya, I know,
You have TMJ...
I have TMJ...
WE ALL HAVE TMJ!
TMJ actually means Temporomandibular (tem-puh-roe-man-DIB-u-lur) Joint (TMJ).
...and that is it.
My point: everyone has this joint.
*SO, its uneducated to hear clients self diagnosis this...joint!
Thank you, Web MD.
Let me help:
This joint acts acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your jaw. It lets you move your jaw up and down, and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn.
If You have TMJ disorders or dysfunctions,
which are a type of temporomandibular malfunctioning.
Then you can experience pain in your jaw joint, and in the muscles that control jaw movement. Beyond pain, you may not be able to open your jaw to full range of motion. Your jaw may feel or get stuck. You may experience clicking or popping with movement. You may have trouble chewing, or simply feel tired in your face. Inflammation is often present.
You may also have toothaches.
In one of my most severe cases with a client, she presented: headaches, neck aches, dizziness, earaches, hearing problems, upper shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears or tinnitus.
I have consistently palpated, and have come to find thru my own private practice, that TMJ Disfunction can even cause pain and lack of range of motion in the neck.
I have consistently palpated, and have come to find thru my own private practice, that TMJ Disfunction can even cause pain and lack of range of motion in the neck.
Some causes are injury/trauma like whiplash.
Extensive dental work, holding mouth open for long periods of time.
Grinding, and clenching teeth.
Chewing gum.
Playing certain musical instuments.
Poor posture.
Arthritis.
Ongoing and unmanaged stress.
I took a continued education class on intra-oral jaw massage many years ago, and it was a huge success with treating clients! Thru ongoing practice, I have added my own techniques to be effective, and efficient with our time together. Changes can be felt immediately after treatment!
Less pain.
More range of motion, and less or no sounds like the popping!
Immediately.
In addition to bodywork, ongoing stress reduction should be on the forefront of goals.
Certainly massage is a wonderful option for relaxation and treatment!
*I would suggest a night guard , not to fix your situation, because it will not;
but I do suggest it because, until you stop grinding/clenching your beautiful teeth, you should be proactive, and protect them.
Our goal can be to do away with those retainers, they don't have to be a life sentence.
I also offer ANF Therapy is another option, however, this does consists of wearing medical discs on your face for 72 hours.
When you receive treatment from me, I look at you whole-body, holistically.
I will dress your needs, and focus on the goals during session together.
I will go beyond this, and educate you on your body, and natural ways to heal yourself in life.
I will always dress body mechanics, posture, gait, so that you will be mindful, and good with your body, outside of my office.
I implement a plan, with homework...like stretches and relaxation techniques.
...and you have hope!
TMJ Disfunction is generally curable, as people usually can manage the disorder with self-care, like receiving massage therapy from qualified hands, and home remedies like self massage, stretching and overall stress reduction .
You have hope without surgeries, and without extensive mouth-pieces, retainers beyond simple teeth protection. You don't have to subject your body to addictive medication with toxic prescriptions to mask the pain, instead of addressing, and fixing the issue naturally.
You have hope.
