Paying Attention to the Magic of Compassion
Compassion is a character trait, although it can be learned and cultivated as an adult! Compassion is one of the four C's; along with competency, communication and convenience, these are things patients/clients should be able to expect from their healthcare providers. Anyone in the medical field of service should be mindfully aware, and have an understanding of compassion. One definition of compassion is, " sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it." Here in lies the magic! When we are present with others, and in the moment, and we allow vulnerability to be, and we are transparent, and if their is suffering, and if we can help, and to do so with intentional actions of heart centered-love, and engulfing palpable grace; the payment of service, experience, and engagement becomes more significant than anything else measurable. The intangible becomes imprinted. IT becomes SOMETHING. The importance of compassion may unsettle medical providers/healers who think their duty is to be proficient, up-to-date, clinical, as well as laws that govern that we need to maintain a professional distance from clients/patients. Life happens somewhere in these cracks, and it's the human element, the essence of life, that becomes most raw...it is real it is something too! You can learn the communication skills, and you can learn that the whole point of empathy is to focus attention on the patient/client. Compassion as a gift everyone can use. For example, a good technique for showing compassion, is simple: 3 T’s. Talk (or listen), take time and touch. Merely taking the time to talk and listen to patients/clients is comforting, nothing is as comforting as touch! TOUCH!!! And this is why I LOVE MASSAGE THERAPY. Touch is life altering, healing, healthy, high vibration...happiness! Touch is essential. Touch feels good. Touch is a relationship that heals! There are three main ingredients to a good relationship: empathy, honesty and genuineness. It's highly personal, its rooted in authentic care, and the will to relieve clients/patients suffering. Research has produced ample empirical evidence for proving what should seem obvious: Feeling soothed or cared for through the experience of meaningful social or human connections produces a physiological state in the body that is optimum for healing, the immune system literally gets a boost!!! Cortisol levels drop. Blood pressure goes down. Stress and anxiety begin to melt away, and a person's mental state improves. Compassion saves lives, and expressing empathy in healthcare is THE KEY INGREDIENT to enhancing the patient experience, and patient encounter, ultimately the patient/client getting back to health and wellness. Empathy encompasses a connection and an understanding that includes the mind, body, and soul. Expressing empathy is highly effective and powerful, which builds patient trust, calms anxiety, and improves health outcomes. Think of taking the high road, the road less traveled, yet the road with the most amazing views...Compassion and communication skills are part of a good bedside manners. Not all providers take the high road, however, for the ones that do, they get paid in magic!
